111 countries have passed a resolution calling for a referral of alleged crimes against humanity in North Korea to the ICC prosecutor. The resolution was adopted in the UN General Assembly’s human rights committee and will be before the full assembly for formal approval in December.
The resolution followed a report published in February by a UN Commission of Inquiry providing details of alleged wide-ranging abuses in North Korea. The allegation ranged inter alia from prison camps, torture, rap, starvation and public executions and forced labor, which may amount to crimes against humanity.
