Uganda wants a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for Africa to ensure the continent’s interests are protected, Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni was quoted as stating last week.
“The Council needs greater credibility, legitimacy and representation. It is an injustice that the entire continent of Africa, with 53 member states and a population of over one billion people, has no permanent representation on this council”, a presidential spokeswoman quoted president Museveni as saying in a speech to the UN Security Council Summit in New York.
Uganda is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Museveni said the UN should optimize the contribution of organizations like the African Union given their advantages of proximity to respond quickly to maintain peace and security.
