ICTY: Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markač convicted of Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes, Ivan Čermak Aquitted


Trial Chamber I of the ICTY today convicted Croatian Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markač, of persecution, deportation, plunder, wanton destruction, two counts of murder, inhumane acts and cruel treatment. These crimes were committed as part of a joint criminal enterprise whose objective was permanent removal of the Serb population from the Krajina region of Croatia. The crimes took place between July and September 1995, during Operation Storm. Gotovina and Markac were sentenced to 24 and 18 years’ imprisonment respectively. Ivan Čermak was aquitted of all charges.
