The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea will listen to an appeal attempting to put an end to criminal proceedings against two Italian marines who are charged with shooting and killing a pair of Indian fishermen in February 2012. Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone were working as part of an escort, accompanying the oil tanker Enrica Lexie on its journey from Singapore to Egypt, when they mistook two fishermen for pirates. They opened fire on the fishermen, resulting in their deaths, which led to Latorre and Salvatore being arrested and ultimately prosecuted. In 2014 Lattore was given permission to return to Italy on the grounds of having a medical condition and Girone is at present living at the Italian mission in New Delhi after being refused consent to return home.
